Big Little Lies
i have no clue why this is on letterboxd but i fucking loved this show. i was so tense that entire last half hour i think i only just started breathing again
the cinematography is beautiful. the soundtrack is perfect. the lead actors all absolutely killed in their roles. but i think what really stands out about Big Little Lies is it’s representation of such complex and diverse women. the show in no way shys away from conflict but it’s never unfounded or too over-the-top, because each of the women are developed enough for viewers to understand their justifications for their actions and empathize with them, despite how ridiculous and petty they might seem on the surface.
shailene woodley and nicole kidman really stood out above the rest, but ultimately this entire cast deserves to be highly commended. shailene’s jane was simulataneously so empowering and so so heartbreaking, and celeste’s (nicole kidman) domestic abuse storyline showed one of the most distressing and hard-hitting relationships i’ve seen portrayed in film. those scenes of her attempting to defend perry’s (alexander skarsgård) actions at the therapist are so raw. nicole really shined in this role.
i’m so thankful this exists, and i really hope this positive representation it is able to affect other women as much as it has affected me. possibly even help those who are struggling with similar issues of abuse or simply just provide new insight and start conversations within personal relationships. female friendships are complex! and so very beautiful.
