If you weren’t racist before this movie you definitely will be after. Luckily for me I uhhhh… Well it doesn’t matter. Great little time capsule of the city in ‘03. Crazy to think so soon after 9/11 things felt this natural and for seemingly everyone besides Ming Ding- laid-back. Pretty raw movie, reminds me of a time when indie films were being made by people with a vision and literal micro-budgets with most of the “cast” being (I’m pretty certain) just regular folk who ignored the presence of a dude with a camera. A time before the **multi-million** dollar projects pumped out by A24 are still somehow considered “indie”. A look into the day in the life of someone you’ve walked past on the street a dozen times every day. Someone trying to get by. Make ends meet. Support their families. A story you only really ever see being told through white faces in decent apartments and wearing name-brand clothes but the movie tells you they’re broke so you believe it. Nah man, this is the real deal. All that said, I’m a slut for narrative, and this is one of those slice-of-life type situations. Which while I can respect- don’t exactly land themselves in the vaunted annals of my favorites list. Love Ming Ding. Tip your service workers. And for Christ’s sake don’t be a cunt at Chinese takeout restaurants it’s not that hard.
