my parents named me after nicolas cage in this film. not sure why. after seeing the most unlikeable characters be unlikeable for forty minutes complete with the total lack of one (ONE) nonsexualised female character I did give up watching :)

i really liked the first time Clark went into the backrooms, it was so suspenseful and terrifying even without seeing ANYTHING and just hearing footsteps. But I really didn’t enjoy the pirate and the edible memory people. The kitchen scene is easily the weakest part of the movie. Seeing the monsters in bright lighting, up close, removed all the suspense from it and really took the wind out of its sails for me. The backrooms set looks incredible, and the video camera sections were beautiful additions, but i just didn’t enjoy the direction they went with the plot.

very strong concept and a beautiful aesthetic. It’s an awesome step forward for independent filmmakers. HOWEVER. I found the plot very confusing, especially toward the end, Simon’s lore is totally incomprehensible, and Mark’s acting is noticeably weak. This concept requires a very experienced actor because the overall narrative is solely focused on Simon’s emotional and mental state, whereas Mark is probably better suited to reactive acting where he’s not responsible for the emotions heavy lifting. I also agree with other reviewers that it is far too long for what it is- it could easily be an hour long- BUT overall I’m very proud of him and all he’s accomplished.

two thumbs down for this gem
