It might feel like a departure from Bong Joon-Ho’s earlier work but I think it’s actually the most Bong Joon-Ho movie he’s ever made.  From a highly detailed, highly intelligent creature that is both a little gross and deeply adorable to the 21st century marxist commentary that is anything but subtle, this is a trump-era tech-billionaire satire masquerading as a blockbuster sci-fi rom-com.  Joon-Ho has always layered his capitalism critiques with humor and absurdity but Pattinson, Collette, and Ruffalo’s performances make this absurdity feel more tongue-in-cheek than The Host, Okja, or Snowpiercer.  It’s goofy, it's romantic, it’s horny, it’s nasty, it’s heartbreaking.
