Cure
Genuinely wtf was that
Does not hold back at all. Indescribable levels of paranoia. Absolutely terrifying. As the film unfolds it just gets harder and harder to breathe as it just relentlessly drives through you. The sound (and often the absence of it) is so chilling. Really the key that makes the whole thing as unsettling as it really is.
It's also just a super depressing portrait of our own futile attempts at finding some kind of higher meaning, which really just makes it even more horrifying to watch. Watching character after character succumb to their own internal emptiness is really no fun at all. Fantastically done, though (obviously).
Besides that, it is just absolutely stunning, visually. The Criterion scan looks absolutely phenomenal; the colors pop really well and the images look very sharp. I would recommend watching it in this format if you can find a copy.
