Adolescence
“Jamie: Dad, I haven't done anything!“
Wow. Just woah.
I listen to a whole lot of true crime, and when I entered this serie I wasn’t really expecting anything. Turns out this serie is everything that’s wrong in my generation. The fact this is not a made up thing, that it actually happens around us all the time and we’ve kind of normalised it, or some men have at least. Jamie’s school friends really defended his actions and found them reasonable. Jeez.
"Jamie: So I thought when she was, like, that weak, she might...She might like me."
Jamie was obviously struggling with self esteem issues during the whole series. He didn’t find himself attractive, and really craved for validation of others. My favourite episode was where the therapist tried to help Jamie understand why he killed Katie. The way Jamie switched up from being the kind child eating his sandwich to throwing chairs aggressively was a hard watch. Not because it was awful acting — but because it was really good.
We are still surrounded my kids who think alike to him. For the example the ones who listen to Andrew Tate without shame. Jamie was one of them, but he took it far enough to end someone’s life because she disrespected his pride. And because she was a girl.
"Eddie: I'm sorry, son. I should have done better".
I cried at the last episode. How Eddie blamed himself for being the reason Jamie ended up being who he was tough to bear. He loved Jamie and couldn’t even bear himself to believe Jamie would have taken a girls life in the beginning.
Seeing how the family struggled whilst Jamie was in jail was very much needed in the whole series to tie it together. If some people had same thoughts as Jamie did and watched the adolescence — seeing how his family struggled might have led them not to do it. Very few actually wish seeing their family suffer for their actions.
"Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them."
- A quote from the handmaid’s tale that fits perfectly on adolescence.
What I would snack with this movie:
food : sandwich (pickles and cheese)
drink : hot chocolate ☕️ **
**
“Jamie: Can I have a cup of hot chocolate please?”
