Poor Things
Yorgos Lanthimos is a visionary and a freak.
Poor Things is brilliant, comedic, entertaining and sexual. Every frame is a piece of art - full of colour and artistic vision. The use of fish-eye lens and wide shots work well (unsurprisingly) as an emblem of Lanthimos’ style. He is a director that is in complete control of his ideas, who is able to stand out from his competitors and achieve beautiful and impactful works of art.
Emma Stome is a tour de force, devouring her role. Mark Ruffalo plays a character I would never imagine him playing. Willem Dafoe continues to prove that the Oscar are a joke. The smartness of the set design help achieve a very victorian yet modern look. The music being bipolar in its sound helps emphasise Bella’s childish nature. Without spoiling the movie, Lanthimos delivers the message of liberation in a unique and comical way, which works very well with Bella as a character.
Poor Things is a fairytale that was not made for kids, but it is also proof that Lanthimos is unstoppable at what he does.
