Manhunter
“Have you ever seen blood in the moonlight, Will? It appears quite black.”
Manhunter is noir transfused and brought back to life in another dimension.
The gloom, the aloneness, the way Michael Mann exploits every setting like a waking hallucination… the blue light of the night scenes bleeding into flashes of red… wow. So much of this film is visual. The framing is immaculate, the cinematography effortlessly stylish. And the soundtrack! Every piece of music, from the pulsing synths to that final blast of “Heartbeat” is perfectly chosen. Pure 80s Michael Mann shit.
The mixture of psychological horror and detailed, clinical FBI work is incredible, but what really makes the film stand apart is how intensely subjective it all feels. You’re trapped inside the minds of both Will Graham and Francis Dolarhyde, watching two isolated people try to make sense of a world that neither can fully connect with.
Tom Noonan is great. There are moments where you genuinely feel for him and can see the fractures in his perception of the world. The sequence with Reba, especially when he takes her to hear the heartbeat of the tiger, is beautiful. For a brief moment, you see the possibility of redemption.
And Dennis Farina deserves his flowers. The scene where Graham pieces together how the killer knows so much, while Crawford watches him with this quiet awe, is fantastic.
Brian Cox is excellent as Lecktor too. He has a cold, understated presence that feels deeply unsettling without ever needing to dominate the film.
That last ten minutes… ABSOLUTE BANGER.
All hail Michael Mann
