Soul
This is probably my most rewatched movie ever, and it hits in a different way every time. Not because anything changes, but because I do.
On the surface it’s about music and purpose, but what really got me is the questioning underneath it. The fear of not being special. The fear of not having a spark. The idea that maybe you’re waiting your whole life for something that was never meant to define you in the first place.
On first watch, 22 hit harder than I expected. That feeling of not wanting to go to Earth because what if you fail? What if you’re not meant for anything extraordinary? That’s real. And the movie doesn’t mock that insecurity. It treats it gently.
I also love that it doesn’t end with some grand triumphant “you found your destiny” moment. It’s quieter than that. It’s about noticing the small things. A slice of pizza. A walk. A breeze. The ordinary stuff that ends up being the whole point.
The animation is beautiful, the music slays, but what stays with me is the existential ache underneath it. It’s simple and deep at the same time.
