What a phenomenal debut. Michael Mann has such a cool style. The cinematography is some of my absolute favorite ever and the shots are incredible, and ooo the color is stunning too. I also really loved the soundtrack and James Caan’s performance here. And some really memorable dialogue too.
The film is a bit slow in parts, but I honestly didn’t mind because it was just visual art to me.
I’m noticing a pattern that Mann’s main characters are often lonely, and completely removed from a regular life. It’s actually pretty sad just seeing Frank carrying around that collage of his dream life. But that’s what makes the ending even better.
And what an ending that was. Absolutely loved it.
It reminded me a bit of Drive, but in my opinion, this is how you do it.
Also, the cars back then were so sick! I wonder why they quit making em like that. I want that white corvette Barry was driving around.
