Spirited Away
Everything that happens stays inside you. Even if you don’t remember it.
I was not expecting Spirited Away to be as deep as it was. This was my third Ghibli movie and I really liked the anthropological messaging in Princess Mononoke, but the Anti-Capitalist themes in this are much more well illustrated in my opinion. The character design feels so unique and made with intention. My favorite was definitely No Face: A lurking presence of greed that consumed those who succumb to it. The Anti-Capitalism is even further driven by the fact that No Face is praised for his wealth, until the people learn how he truly came to acquire it.
The visuals of the movie are also impeccable, Miyazaki manages to create this dreamy world that modern 3D Animation films simply can’t recreate. And as I said before, the character designs feel very fleshed out both in meaning and visually.
Definitely my favorite Ghibli movie so far, going to for sure be checking out the rest of them at some point. I would highly recommend check this out if you haven’t already. I really think that there is something for everyone when you watch Spirited Away.
