Sunset Boulevard
[96/100]
This is my first Billy Wilder film and I am seriously impressed. I have been a huge sucker for old Hollywood these past couple weeks, so this feels like the perfect time for me to be watching this.
Joe and Norma’s dynamic is beautiful. Joe is a struggling screenwriter down bad on cash and luck. He steals a car and evades the police, parking the car in a home he believes is abandoned. There he meets Norma: a washed-up silent film star looking to make a com- I mean return to the big screen. Together, they form a rather volatile relationship that seems to only be held together by their mutual shortcomings.
Technically speaking, this is about as good as it gets for 1950. The mansion that majority of the film is shot at is absolutely gorgeous; especially the room where Joe and Norma first meet. The score is transcendent. Overall, this is just great. Definitely going to be checking out more stuff from Billy Wilder.
