coming out of this wanting to go back to the text to see what Chrissy was tryna work with and then reassess but that’s a lot of work:( gimme 10 (yrs)! Ezra Klein literally told me that Nolan’s The Odyssey would offer me a through line for our contemporary turbulent times but where was it 😭 I saw nostalgia for the judeo-Christian “golden rule”. I saw grandiose sound/visual effects (not in imax🥺). I saw Odysseus deviating from Agammemnon’s route home to avoid confronting what he knows his Trojan war trickery had caused - the moral collapse of civilization. and of course our society is facing the same post-trickery-what-do-we-do-now questions. But where in the world was the through line Ezra!!? the message to be learned for us? Maybeee it was there, but it was certainly veiled in contradiction, undeveloped characters, and not enough Lupita Nyong’o. I felt like the emotional payoff of the literal riding into the sunset was perhaps a bit unearned. maybeeee Odysseus earned it but .. have we? if anyone wants to book club this lmk :p
