Yi Yi
fuck man. This movie just understands the minutiae of being human. nothing I could say could do this movie any justice.
it’s so rich in meticulous, thematic detail and gorgeous compositional work—it’s nothing flashy, but it seeps into your mind over the course of the film and paralyzes you. The blocking in this film is so simple but it’s so beautiful to me in a way I can’t quite place my finger on. The choice to forgo a traditional score in favor of diegetic sound for pretty much the whole film made silence so damn oppressive and stark.
This is a movie I think everybody can universally and viscerally understand. Saying it’s a movie about everything is a bit of a bastardization, but Yi Yi is kind of a movie about everything.
