The Shining
okay yall a lot to unpack and before y’all dog on me for a 5 star let me explain some things
“I wish we could stay here forever… and ever… and ever.”
the shining has an insane amount of symbolism and I am definitely not going to attempt to put all of it together, but here me out: the ambiguity is what genuinely makes this movie. I think from first watch we can all grasp the main undertones of this movie… addiction and abuse, both can I say were fairly represented by Kubrick. the cinematography definitely cannot be argued against, as well as the soundtrack (scared me SHITLESS)
going back to underlying themes. YES, Stephen King’s book tackles the root of these themes and the characters MILES better, but we still have to recognize that this movie is INSANE. Jack Nicholson (pardon if I spell his last name wrong) is truly terrifying (literally almost shit my pants and did actually start crying) and Shelly Duvall (may she rest in peace) also puts on one of the best performances I’ve personally witnessed in a movie.
ALSO— for those saying “oh the ending is HORRIBLE” I personally do NOT agree. Kubrick changed the ending from King’s original book (and yeah okay but let’s not try and hate) to make it so that jack never really recovers. I think that he completely deserved what had happened in the end (trying not to spoil). I also think again, ambiguity in the ending, PLEASE lets just leave this up to our minds to conjure whatever we believe is happening. y’all want something definite, but I believe that one of our worst fears is the unknown… COME ON!
ok sorry for the long ass review
im cutting it short because i could literally yap about this movie forever… and ever… and ever
**it was right there ok sorry lmao
