7 y/o me: “this movie”*in all seriousness, i fucking love this movie.
as a kid, i was (still am to be honest) a chronic movie rewatcher. most of the time, it was either a star wars movie, the lord of the rings trilogy or any barbie film. but then my dad got this movie on blu ray and added ‘avatar’ to this list.
i don’t think i can express just how enthralling this movie was for me. i’ve always loved movies; being drawn in into a story (a fantasy, really) for hours, practically sitting at the edge of my seat as i watched the plot evolve and follow characters in their worlds was definitely one of my favorite pastimes. i just couldn’t escape the beauty of pandora and the na’vi.
i’ll admit, the plot isn’t anything special (cliche at times), but it works so well. jake is a lonely, miserable ex-marine who, through a tragic twist of fate, ends up taking his twin brother’s place on pandora and finds connection, beauty and love on a strange planet, all things he didn’t have back in earth. say what you want, 7 y/o me (and present me!) ate that up. and ‘avatar’ gives all of that with a beautiful score - and also talks about colonialism and humanity’s exploitation of nature. and the big villain of this is some humongous corporation? sign me up!
because in light of so much shit going on in the world, who wouldn’t want to be on pandora, be a part of the na’vi, when everything there is just so beautiful? who wouldn’t want to be part of a clan - of people - that live in such harmony with nature (their entire planet, really) and get to fly on an ikran?? i know i would
