The Shawshank Redemption
I watched this movie first when I was really young and didnt understand it the same as I do now. The movie is about Andy Duffrene, a banker convicted for murdering his wife and her lover, who attends Shawshank prison and meets Red, another convicted murderer. He befriends fellow prisoners and forms alliances through his kind, geniune and caring personality. He builds a library, helps guards with their finances, etc. At the end of the movie he escapes Shawshank and exposes the corrupt Warden and some guards for the crimes they commit in the prison.
I really enjoyed how the director characterised Andy and made him such a likeable character. He gave him a geniune and quiet soul, looking out for his mates, wether it was snagging some beers, building libraries, helping them pass high school or playing music through CDs. He is shown as just a good human being, and at the end his escape his justified because of his character traits.
The jail is potrayed as less of a rehabilitation centre but more of a place which just takrs your life out. Some characters such as Brookie got so dependable on the jail that he eventually had to kill himself.
I also loved the way the director presented Brooksie. Hes an old man who spent more than 50 years at Shawshank, and when hes let out, the movie shows how empty some men can feel when they feel as if they have no worth. Without Jake, his bird, or his mates, he had nothing to live for. Shawshank not only had taken time out of his life but also the people that he had cared for and loved, eventually leading to his suicide.
Even Red, holy what a character. I could go all day talking about him but hes just the perfect reprentation of an instutionalised man. He goes in the start from despair and loss to feeling hopeful and eventually redemption.
All the other characters, Tommy, the Warden, the Guard, they all are also so rich in real world values and representations. Overall this movie is one of the best and is definately a 5 star. And I assure you, I am not saying this movie is good because its famous but its definately famous because of how good it is.
