The Curse
putting together the pieces online helped a lot with this. definitely greened out on my first safdie joint… i loved emma stone as usual. there is a lot i wished for in terms of execution — for example, a lot of aspects of somalian folklore were deeply rooted in the lore of the show. why deliberately withhold that? too many people singing this show’s praises and i am just conflicted.
what i was most impressed by HAS to be the performances and how detailed and novel the portrayal of gentrification was. the scenes with cara and whitney were among my favorites.
this really feels like a situation where the whole did not work for me, even though i liked the sum of its parts. the frequency of shots anchored inside cars facing outward or from inside nearby buildings adds a sense of voyeurism. the effects in here are phenomenal, from hiding production equipment in the mirrored houses to … when that thing happens.
