So peak, insanely creative, great story, crazy good protagonist and performance from Korean Mads Mikkelson. It’s an absolute joke this didn’t get into the Oscar’s at all last year.

Trying to avoid spoilers so I’m not going to go into any specifics but be warned anyway… Very conservatively directed (hah) allowing the writing to take centre stage. And oh boy this movie is so well written. As someone with parents who share a lot of similarities with the Gheorghius I definitely found myself rooting for them the majority of the runtime despite not sharing the same beliefs. However without this prior context I still do think that I would be largely on their side. Christian Mungiu brilliantly uses irony to highlight the main core of the film; dogmatism and discrimination are not an exclusive experience. There were many points in this film where I found myself questioning the Gheorghius parenting style. But by the end I realised how can anyone judge someone else’s parenting style? I mean at the end of the day we are all human and everyone’s going to have different ways of doing things. Idk I suppose there will be many people who believe the Gheorghius are in the wrong and there won’t buy into it but that kind of just proves the movie right. It could be my own bias of course tho and I’m sure there will be many who interpret this differently than I and probably think lesser of it and there will be some that will think fonder of it. Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan are fantastic definitely not their most expressive roles but they really don’t need to be. And that ending really does throw you for a curveball there. Also whenever Renate Reinsve wore glasses, she looked eerily similar to my senior English teacher so that’s great. Overall I really did connect with this film and I absolutely cannot wait till this comes out in general cinemas because I know there will be some juicy discussions about this film.

Not bad but this movie just pmo so much that I found myself questioning whether I even liked the movie lol. Also it was so awesome yet weird watching a slow burn, foreign drama in a packed theatre with an audience that were genuinely engaging with the film. Like I’m pretty sure I heard more reactions watching this than with phm and disclosure day combined!

Such a painfully accurate depiction of a parent/child relationship that I never want to watch this again
