Dunkirk
One of those movies that it’s going to take me a while to unravel why I responded so strongly.
To start though; this more than any other war movie I have ever seen made me tear up to think of my own grandfathers’ stories about their experiences in the war. The stories they shared with me were so small, so banal, so far from the political center of the war. One, seriously ill with malaria, owed his life to army men who remained unknown to him who stole an army jeep and delivered him to a hospital (and also spent his entire life captaining ships). The other rescued his mother and sisters from their bread oven after nazis had killed his father and set the farmhouse ablaze, leading him to join the French underground at 15. Dunkirk captures the feeling of the war that neither crossfire and bombs or war room meetings can.
