another one that I feel I’d probably enjoy just a tad more had I grown up with it. far from a bad movie, though! the animal designs were very cute.

I watched four new movies this week so, naturally, I had to treat myself 💖

this movie was cute! it made me cry, the music was fun, and unlike most, I really love the art style! You can definitely tell there were issues behind the scenes, and I’m very curious to know just how drastically different the original film was, but overall I’m not upset about what we got. I liked Elio as a character a lot, and his loneliness and feelings of not belonging were relatable for sure, but I kind of wish we knew more about his life prior to the start of the film. like, I wish we knew a little more about his parents. the detail about them also speaking Elioese (idk how to spell it lmao) was so sweet, I would’ve liked to learn a little more. I also would’ve liked more scenes with him and his aunt, but again, I’m not unhappy with what we got. their reunion on the beach made me tear up 🤧 I was a little worried Glordon would be annoying but I actually really liked him, and his dad swaddling him at the end also made me cry. also, I was kind of hoping we’d see his mom in one of the credit scenes, but it’s fine we didn’t, I suppose. this review is kind of all over the place but oh well lmao overall, I really liked the movie!! while I have enjoyed most of Pixar’s recent films, I haven’t felt a strong urge to rewatch any of them, but I’d definitely rewatch Elio✨👽💚

I don't think this movie was nearly as bad as many people are claiming, but I definitely don't think it's very good, either. like most of these remakes, it's really held back by the fact that it's trying to be two different movies at once. it wants to be a shot for shot remake, it tries very hard to capture the same tone as the original with it's recreated shots, though it really fails in my opinion. but it also wants to be something New and Original. but you can't be two films inside one movie, you have to pick !! are we shot for shot or are we new?? quite frankly, I would rather they just completely reimagine the entire thing. I don't like shot for shot remakes. they're pointless, to me, and come off as very disrespectful to the original source material. if I'm going to sit through a remake, I want something new. and it sucks because the new stuff in here could have been interesting. had they focused on the bandits more, instead of just leaving them in the background for... some reason, it might have been a half decent movie. but again, it's held back by the fact that it has to recreate all of the iconic scenes from the original. the romance in this film is also odd to me. I can suspend disbelief pretty easily, especially with romance in fairy tales. I fully believe the original Snow and her Prince were in love, despite only meeting the one time. but with Snow and Jonathan, I just don't really feel much. their first meeting, where she sets him free, actually wasn't terrible, and I thought I might enjoy them together. but then they meet again in the woods, and all he does is belittle her 😭 like the "banter" felt so forced, and I didn't even understand why they were suddenly acting that way towards each other. Snow just told Jonathan that the Queen wants her dead, so why is he singing about her "Princess Problems"??? also, this might sound silly coming from someone who loves Enchanted more than life itself, but I'm so tired of hearing characters say things like, "Princesses are always waiting for a prince to show up." like, can we move on from the meta commentary? it literally only worked in Enchanted because that was a parody. it did not work in Frozen, and it has not worked in any movie since. please, please stop making me listen to characters say shit like this, please, I'm begging. you will never be Robert Philip!!!!!!!!! anyway, back to Jonathan. the costume choices were weird, he looks very modern next to the rest of the cast. and I don't buy the sudden change from them bickering in the forest to "oh, maybe we're... in love????" again, I can suspend disbelief, but you have to give me something solid to actually hold onto here, and this movie just. Doesn't. I will say, though, "A Hand Meets a Hand" is a great song, I absolutely love it! but storywise, it didn't feel very earned. I would've liked to have seen Snow and Jonathan actually bond with each other for longer than two seconds. if you're going to "correct" the issues with the romance in the original film, actually "correct" them?? I don't like the 2015 remake of Cinderella, but I can at least give it credit for giving more screen time to Kit and Ella. moving on from that, Gal Gadot can't act to save her life, but we all knew that. she also cannot sing. I really don't understand why she was cast here. or in anything, really, but especially here. we need to stop casting actors in musicals who cannot sing, I'm so serious. her old hag makeup was also awful. it almost felt like they didn't want to make her ugly? which, I guess you could argue that the Queen values beauty too much to want to actually be an old, ugly hag, but come on... the makeup wasn't even scary 😭 literally nothing about her was frightening. circling back to the beginning of the film, I’m confused as to why the Huntsman gave the Queen an apple instead of a pigs heart. was that too gruesome for modern Disney? why an apple? I mean, I understand this movie is all about apples but. the Huntsman was trying to trick the Queen, why not try to make it a bit more believable…? Rachel Zegler is really the only good thing about this film, which many have already said. she has a very beautiful voice and a ton of talent, it sucks to see her in such an awful film. and it sucks even more that they gave her a bad bob and an ugly ass dress. what happened in the costume and makeup departments.... I took notes while watching this, so this review is probably a bit all over the place, but another thing I wrote down was that I wish Snow and the girl she gave the flower crown to had an actual relationship. in fact, I would've actually really liked if she was in Jonathan's role instead of Jonathan. let her be queen of the bandits. she and Snow already have a history together, just let them form an actual bond with each another. let them kiss, even !!!!!!!!!! oh, and how could I forget... the dwarves. they're hideous. they look like they jumped out of Shrek. they have magic, but that's never brought up again. and they're mean as hell to Dopey, like omg, leave that man alone !!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this might be the longest review I've ever written. huh. well anyway, overall, the movie sucked ! the costumes felt cheap, the sets were boring (though the village looked Really familiar and I can't figure out where I've seen it before. batb2017 maybe???), and the ending was incredibly anticlimactic. seriously, why couldn't she be crushed by a boulder? I've felt this way since the Incredibles 2, but deaths in Disney (or just. defeating the villains in general) have been so boring lately. I hate to sound like a boomer but :/ back in my day, villains had their necks snapped by vines and were pushed off castle bridges while skulls flashed in their eyes. now, we get whatever the hell this was. the credits were super cute, though! love the art style. and I do appreciate that Snow was humming, “Someday my Prince Will Come.” I also liked that Jonathan was held in the dungeon! I thought that was a nice reference to the original, since the Prince was also meant to be held captive. Waiting on a Wish was a good song, though I feel like it would’ve fit better in Wish (2023) and, as I mentioned above, A Hand Meets a Hand is a banger! and though it was a little cringe, I did giggle when they almost kissed but stopped because everyone was watching. their awkward “Hi…” was Cute, I’ll give them that!
