Wonder Man
Oh my god this was fantastic. Everyone please watch this by any means necessary lowkey pirate 🏴☠️ ts. I have fallen in love with Marvel again! 🤩 … can I put a show in my top 4? 🤔
Okay maybe I think I have the words for what I was trying to say. Simon’s mother tells Trevor about how when Simon was little he was trying to ride his dads bike, which was too big for him, and he fell off and got hurt and she patched him up, and as she was patching him up Simon told her “thank you for loving me, mommy” she says that he had never expressed something like that before, and in that moment she realized that maybe her boy wasn’t really fine being alone as much as he acted like he was, maybe the acting, movies, posters, collections, would take the place of people, not as replacements, but as armor. Trevor is the first person she sees Simon open up to, proof that Simon doesn’t choose isolation but that he learned it. This is essentially masking, which many neurodivergent people chronically do, and Simon having superpowers only makes that allegory hit even harder. He is perpetually quiet, self absorbed, pretty much in his own world and has been ever since he was young. Simon, as most people who mask, believes that being himself is risky, maybe he thinks he will overtalk or say something annoying or something else, in the show you can see that as an actor he copies what he sees around him to survive socially (and also to break into evil government agencies ofc), so that he can control how he is perceived and replace connection he is too scared of with performance, but when you live like that you don’t stop needing people, you just stop believing that they’re safe or that their intentions are genuine. You stop trusting people, all people. Whenever he gets the Wonder Man gig he thinks that someone must have tried to expose his superpower secret, because someone must have…right? Or that someone talked bad about his minor misdeeds for some reason to stomp on his newfound Hollywood career, but in reality behind this persecutory ideation, everyone had nothing but good things to say about him, because he’s a good guy and he loves the people around him even if that love is masked. It’s probably masked because there’s just too much of it. He doesn’t fear connection, he fears that he is tip-toeing around losing it and then losing any chance at success within every moment, one imperfect moment and it’s over mentality, and it keeps the stakes high for the show because it’s from his perspective, but it hinders the characters ability to form connection.
I love the scene where Simon (Wonder Man) and Trevor (Fake Mandarin Terrorist from Iron Man 3) are at Simon’s mother’s party and everyone is loud and celebrating and Simon is there kind of in the back, but he isn’t really there, he’s not present, and Trevor can see that and maybe he isn’t either, and he gives him a look, I thought that was really cool it reminded me of a scene from the movie All That Jazz, the scene where (I don’t remember it too well) Joe Gideon is in the writers room and he writes some funny shit and everyone starts laughing and being really loud but he isn’t laughing at all, and as we shift to his perspective we hear him focusing on his tinnitus, he’s looking around at everyone laughing and all we hear is ringing, and he isn’t smiling, and he breaks a pencil in his hand. I found the scenes to be thematically similar. This is the greatest thing Marvel has made since X-Men.
This was by far the greatest Marvel show ever. Lowkey the best Marvel Studios creation ever. I got pretty emotional watching it, it was smart and funny and I feel like anyone can watch it without being real into Marvel like I am which is how it should be. Brilliant commentary on Hollywood and the superhero genre, and this is probably the second superhero project besides The Batman I’ve seen that really hits the masking allegory hard with the secret superhero identity aspect of stuff (but I’m sure there are others that I just haven’t picked up on yet) I vibed with it very heavily this show gets it. 🤘
Simon and Trevor are the best Marvel characters ever, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is one of the best actors out there and Ben Kingsley was dope, I need to see Simon become a part of the Avengers in the future. Wonder Man is my favorite Marvel hero right now and it’s not even close. It’s always great seeing Trevor Slatery post Iron Man 3 bender acting as a terrorist arc, I had hoped we would see him again after he was in Shang-Chi and I’m glad we did. I’m very glad that the director of this show is also directing Spider-Man 4 I am like 10x less worried for it I know it’s gotta be good. I watched it all in 1 sitting which is cray because it's like 4 hours long, but I felt moved throughout my entire watch. This show should have been promoted so so so much more because everyone needs to watch it 🗣️ . This is the greatest Marvel project of all time. That ending was absolutely perfect. Simon and Trevor are the greatest duo ever. And marvel bring me some fucking merch like no Wonder Man funko pop no Wonder Man shirts no nothing rn like what are we talking about I’m dying to spend unnecessary amounts of money rn that’s how amazing this show was
Marvel never fell off after Endgame!!!! If anything the opposite. 🤷♀️
Wandavision was amazing, Falcon and The Winter Soldier was amazing, Loki (both seasons) was the best, What-If is okay but like cmon its a kids show its not really substantial or anything, but it actually does have some heartfelt episodes, Shang-Chi was awesome also Simu Liu replied to a Tik Tok comment I left once 😏 light flex, the Eternals is amazing and overhated fuck what everyone on earth except for me says it’s goated🗣️ , Spider-Man 3 is awesome and nostalgic as heck, Hawkeye is great, Ms. Marvel is a masterpiece, Doctor Strange 2 could’ve been the best Marvel movie if it was more horror oriented but its still very very cool, Thor 4 is terrible 👎👎, She-Hulk is amazing and most people who say otherwise are just misogynists that didn’t actually watch the fucking show and I stand by that 🗣️, Black Panther 2 was peak and incredibly emotional idk if a Marvel movie has made me cry more, Captain Marvel 2 was silly, the Guardians Holiday Special was peak, so was Guardians 3, Ant-Man 3 was bad but so are the other Ant-Man movies and at least this one had Kang in it, Deadpool 3 is so stupid its so peak, Ironheart is peak haven’t finished it yet, Secret Invasion was pretty bad which sucks because it should’ve been the best, Moon Knight was pretty bad not very accurate to the character at all, I haven’t seen the new Captain America because I don’t have Disney Plus and I’ve been too lazy to pirate it because I got it spoiled, the new Fantastic Four movie was peak, X-Men 97’ is probably the greatest Marvel Animated project of all time and a masterpiece, Daredevil Born Again is peak I haven’t finished it yet, Marvel Zombies was peak, Thunderbolts was awesome, I haven’t seen Agatha and a few other things I’m sure, but above all else Wonder Man is the greatest project out of all of these that I have listed and it’s also better than everything Marvel pre endgame. I think me loving Iron Man 3 unironically made this show like 10 times better. I’m about to hang up my Iron Man 3 poster because I’m a Marvel believer again. Is the Marvel that fell off after Endgame in the same room as us?? 🤔 Lowkey this show and X-Men are my only two 5 Star Marvel projects 💀 This shit is on the same level as X-Men let that sink🚰 in. Also I love how the department of damage control are lowkey like hunting down mutants without mutants being called mutants yet in the MCU, pretty sure they’re gonna be after Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4 so that’s cool, they should make Spider-Man and Wonderman mutants, this show made the DODC seem like a lot more of a threat and certainly more interesting. But anyways Marvel lore aside this show is so grounded and peak and you don’t really have to see anything to understand it which I love love love 💕
