Jaws
Often when watching films from its time period, I tend to notice many subtle differences in cinematic language - simply that back then, there wasn’t as much polish as you’d find today, often in pacing or tiny details, that make the whole thing feel almost off, but still in a way that allows you to appreciate what it meant for the time.
It is the case with A New Hope and with Raiders for example, and yet sometimes I find a film that just completely blows me away, just as much as it would’ve being released today.
And Jaws blew me out of the water (pun intended).
From John Williams’s Genius and iconic score, to Spielberg’s incredible understanding and control of slowly unveiling Bruce, incredible tension and thrill is apparent all throughout, and especially during the entirety of the second half.
These sections where the cinematic language feels slightly off can still be there here and there, but outside of one scene that still worked this film really is as incredible as 50 years ago.
