Cure
there's so many different things to ponder on this one, the pacing was amazing, the shots, the scenes the colors all added to this film tremendously. I will say the first thematic thing that stood out to me was the "who are you" and the push back on japanese collectivism, how mamiyas questioning of who are you often gets misinterpreted as "what is your occupation" by its answering characters where mamiya is pulling towards more of an individualistic questioning. I think that portrays the conflicting nature of "who am i" vs the country's traditional ethos of "what am i"
Kurosawa says in an interview how the real horror behind cure is the suggestion that every person can have resentments that make anyone capable of violence, it doesn't have to be someone "necessarily evil" i think that resonates very well with the transition of mamiyas "mission" onto takabe, nearing the end of the film.
I also really appreciated and noticed the small habits that led to Takabe and his own individual resolution, for example his appetite, we see him give back an entire plate of food, or when his wife didn't cook the food, versus at the end how he eats his entire plate after he has "cured" or resolved his own resentments.
ANYWAYS i feel like i never write drawn out reviews but i had to yap for once
