Ugetsu
I’ve been exploring Mizoguchi’s work for a while, and after this masterpiece, I can only say that I need to watch more of his films.
Ugetsu begins as a realistic war-time escape story and transforms into a morally complex and unusually compelling ghost tale about desires born in the midst of war. Visually and atmospherically, it is wonderfully dreamlike, mysterious, and at times even frightening.
