Rope
A very well done film. The way Hitchcock made the film feel like it was done in one shot was so cunning and well done. Added a lot to the film. The characters in this film were amazing. The way the film showed how Brandon viewed himself as a “superior being” and those below him as “inferior” was well done. He wanted to plan a perfect murder because he viewed himself as a “superior being”. Contrasted to him was his “lover” Phillip who was just submissive and deep down felt morally wrong for the murder him and Brandon had committed. Those two characters looked so well together and were combining. But James Stewart’s character Rupert was also fascinating. His monologue towards the end was so well delivered and it displayed his character. He had been searching for something and ironically the very students who learned their worldview from him were the ones who helped him see the truth that there is no such thing as “superior beings” who don’t have to abide by the standards of right and wrong. I loved how deep Hitchcock made his characters in this film. The actor performance of their character was tremendously felt done and it felt like they were that actual character. From Brandon’s arrogant view of his superiority to Phillip’s timid submission the characters in this film were truly remarkable. I feel though compared to most Hitchcock’s film this film lacked a lot of suspense throughout. Towards the end it picked up but through the film it lacked a lot of that suspense that makes Hitchcock’s films really stand out. But overall a tremendous film with incredible filming and character depth.
