Spider-Man: Homecoming

Honestly, 5 stars just for the scene of Tom Holland taking his shirt off!

Instead of dragging us through a radioactive spider bite for the third time, Homecoming opens with something brilliant: a chaotic, shaky-cam vlog shot by Peter himself. Revisiting Civil War’s epic airport battle through the eyes of a starstruck 15-year-old instantly resets our expectations. He’s geeking out over Happy Hogan and freaking out over his new tech suit. It’s the pure, unadulterated hype of a kid invited to the adults' table, establishing exactly who this Spider-Man is: a teenager thrilled to be a superhero!

If you stripped away the spandex and CGI, the film would still function perfectly as a classic 1980s High school comedy. The vibe is heavily inspired by John Hughes films like Ferris Bueller's Day Off (which even gets a literal shout-out during the chase scene). The stakes are refreshingly small-scale. Peter isn't stopping an alien invasion; he's trying to pass decathlon practice, talk to his crush, and stop a local guy from selling weaponized alien scrap metal. The bright, grounded aesthetic of Queens makes his world feel lived in, warm, and completely relatable!

I’m not saying Tom Holland is the undisputed best Spider-Man, but Homecoming proves he’s the ultimate sweet spot. He takes Tobey’s dorky charm and mixes it with Andrew’s sharp, witty energy to create something totally unique. Holland brings this anxious, chaotic, and vulnerable energy to Peter Parker, his voice cracks when he's scared, his dialogue is wonderfully clumsy, and his physical comedy is brilliant. He completely nails the ultimate teenage struggle: having the powers of a literal god, but the social status of a high school sophomore who still has a curfew!

The comedy flows naturally, largely thanks to Jacob Batalon as Peter’s best friend, Ned. After accidentally discovering Peter’s secret, Ned becomes the ultimate audience surrogate. Instead of panicking, he asks the questions we all would: Can you summon an army of spiders? Can you use this to make us cool? Ned crowning himself the "guy in the chair" provides some of the funniest, most endearing moments in the entire MCU!

Zendaya also brings some of the film's sharpest comedic flavour despite having relatively limited screen time in this initial entry. Instead of playing the classic "popular girl" or a damsel in distress, Zendaya crafts a character who feels like an actual, quirky high school outsider. She acts as a perfect counterweight to the frantic, people-pleasing energy of Peter and his best friend Ned. Her performance proves that you don't need massive action sequences to leave a lasting impression!
