Don't Worry Darling
i know there was a lot of criticism when this film first came out, but rewatching made me realise how amazing this film actually is!
the way alice’s hallucinations were filmed is so clever and watching them intensify and become more frequent the more she questions the ‘reality’ she is living in and her need to escape it, is so cool yet quite scary to watch and you feel so much empathy for her that increases as the hallucinations intensify.
focusing closely on the hallucinations you can pick up on the fact that they link to the reality that everyone is living in- a controlled environment, where everyone is trapped.
from the beginning you can also see the contrast of the female and male characters. during the day, there are very few/ no male characters present and the scenes are focused widely on the female characters, where multiple times they speak about their husbands and how they don’t know what they are doing, a topic which is not spoken about once they return. this is part of their ‘perfect’ lifestyle that they try to create, where the man has to work while the wife has to stay home.
the ending is also a cinematic masterpiece. the fear of the characters along with the slo mo is incredible, even before bunny yells ‘go! alice, go!’! the car chase after is just incredible, followed by alice running up the hill barefoot to reach the headquarters is just insane- with fear, intensity, strength, everything, along with the music as well!!! UNDERRATED!!!
florence was the stand out of this movie, for sure! the way she put her emotion into alice and was able to use both her physicality, breathing and vocal choices to show her mental state decline as the hallucinations worsen, is incredible!
i do wish we got more development in margaret’s character though. we are only told about her experience in the desert and how this led to her trauma and it would have been nice to delve into her story more (even briefly).
i thought harry did an amazing job at playing jack, however there were moments where his inexperience in acting were more present, especially as the story intensified. the emotion of the character came through very nicely through his vocals and his use of volume, however there were moments where his facial expressions and physicality were quite stiff and didn’t quite match the emotion that his vocal choices seemed to say that he was portraying!
