I was going to write a joke review about Donnie Darko joining the Avengers, and time traveling with the Hulk and Iron Man back to 1970s California. But I like this film too much for that. Fincher's vast but never unwieldy study of obsession - notice how the shots start off wide, getting ever closer and closer as the film continues, until close ups are so huge they spill out of the screen - corners the serial killer movie, the true life movie, the journalism movie and the near history period piece and skewers each one perfectly through the heart. Masterful stuff, and one you get past your inevitable early to mid twenties Fight Club obsession, Fincher's best film - with bonus points for casting the voice of Roger Rabbit, in one of cinema's creepiest descents into a basement.
