My good friend Percy Jackson did this in a week at age 13 (he is a nepo baby though). My expectations were ridiculously high because this is basically a collision of two of my favourite things: Greek mythology and Christopher Nolan films. I actually wrote a 3,000-word essay on the connection between Tisha B’Av (today was Tisha B’Av, the Jewish day of mourning for the destruction of the Temples, exile, and the longing for home) and The Odyssey, but I figured that was a bit much for a Letterboxd review (Substack post incoming). The film does what Nolan does best: it immerses you in the experience. The cinematography is stunning, the score is immense, and I really felt the emotional weight throughout. However, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it fell just short of the impossible standard I’d built in my head. Maybe that’s not the film’s fault. The Odyssey is one of those stories that carries such enormous mythic, philosophical and emotional weight that any adaptation is always going to be wrestling with something almost impossible to contain. Some stories are simply too vast, too strange and too human to ever fit entirely onto a screen. That said, there was so much I loved about it, far too much to list. I especially loved the idea that once men have broken the rules of civilisation, those rules remain broken forever. The trauma of war doesn’t end when the war does, and the moral order it shatters doesn’t simply put itself back together. Also, it gave us Tom Holland × Tom Holland on The Rest Is History, so for that alone I am eternally grateful Side note: this also reminded me that I think Rick Riordan is an absolute genius. The amount of Greek mythology he managed to weave into the Percy Jackson books is unreal. Watching this just made me appreciate even more how faithfully and how cleverly he adapted so many of these myths.

MAGICAL. Fate and love and soulmates and all that jazz 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭>>> (when harry met sally rewatch pending)

When it comes to my mental health, a Pride & Prejudice rewatch isnt a great sign… but wow does it hit the spot every single time. It’s one of those rare films that somehow gets better with every rewatch rather than losing its magic. What should take two hours somehow takes me five because I rewind every scene at least twice.WHERE THE FUCK IS MY MR. DARCY? WHAT THE HELL? WHERE ARE YOU HIDING? DO YOU EVEN EXIST? Sorry post-Pride & Prejudice psychosis incoming. The yearning. The tension. The music, The hand flex. The eye contact😭😭😭😭😭😭It’s all absolute perfection. (Shoutout Jane and Bingley I love them)
