- Not a terrible film, Joaquin Pheonix is excellent as always. Todd Phillips directs it well, with solid cinematography. Plus some all-time classic memes. - Narratively it's extremely reminiscent of Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy - to the point of feeling like a soft remake/amalgamation of the two. - Lacks the depth of those two films as a character study. The relationship twist is telegraphed and adds very little outside of an obvious dramatic moment and the twist with his relationship/lack thereof with Bruce Wayne seems to undermine the class commentary in the themes of the film. - Taxi Driver and King of Comedy as alternatives.
- Very technically impressive, Roger Deakins did his thing. Good performances, well directed overall. - However, the one-take feels like a gimmick in the end and I can't help but feel like if they'd shot it as a more straightforward film the pacing and narrative momentum would have been improved. - It's at it's best when it's delving into gritty war detail, trench grimness etc. but scenes with the french woman and peotic singing in the woods feels needlessly sentimental and cheesy. - Paths of Glory, also contains a great one-shot. Nails WWI grimness and unfairness in court-room drama. Contains a scene with a french woman singing that feels like saccharine than in this film.
- This one I genuinely despise. - The film goes out of it's way to pin the blame of Queen's break-up on Freddie and his erratic behaviour, and feels like a vindictive memorandum written by Bryan May's lawyers to shape the narrative now that Freddie can no longer defend himself. - Some of the worst editing I've ever seen - I'd recommend going to Youtube and watching the 20-minute Live Aid performance instead.
