Close-Up
„When spite comes along, Art dons a veil”; „cinema is a series of lies, said to put in front of us the greater truth”.
„I realised I was so much like Sabzian and the Ahankhah brothers at the same time. I also cheat and get cheated; I also need respect”. – A. Kiarostami.
Excellent titular reference and capturing the essence of the thing that was intended to be explored. Kiarostami claims that he likes the film a lot even though he has no opinions on his films. Probably because "the greater truth" is not initiated by him here. The regions ("everything happened very quickly") that emerge from the document (with its attributes) are examined here, but they are explored in an attempt to reconstruct what has passed.
It is known that it is not known how it really was - that's the point. The hero that is Sabzian himself is not obvious in the reading. There are echoes of "Blow-up" here, only the goal seems a little different. The judgment is left to the viewer, the key is documentary recordings (which are also uncertain).
Fundamentally, nothing can be trusted here – something broader is thus achieved. He forces himself to a different reading – even though Kiarostami doesn't like oppressive cinema, he has become a spectator himself. As he said himself - he sat in the room and did not pay attention to whether someone was leaving or not - usually he would care - he just watched the story he captured, which did not let him sleep for several nights earlier.
So this is a movie that lied to its creator. Or maybe Kiarostami was lying to himself - how human it all is...
