A Serious Man
There are No Answers. Life is Meaningless. I Love this Movie.
The most underrated of the Coen Brothers' entire filmography, A Serious Man is overlooked for good reason: no one should enjoy watching this movie.
The film is a modern day (well, 1960's) retelling of the story of Job, who, in the Bible, did nothing wrong but still had everything he had taken away or destroyed by God to prove to Satan that Job would still worship Him. This movie is bleaker than that.
Saying that the film raises more questions than it does answers would be an understatement. A Serious Man offers no answers, and repeatedly states that there are no answers to be had, and that the point is... It is what it is.
The screenplay is amazing ("Look at the parking lot, Larry!") and Michael Stuhlbarg gives a stellar performance (side note: for some reason when I watched this movie for the first time, I thought Stuhlbarg was Joaquin Phoenix the entire time).
Even the short film that opens the movie could work as an excellent standalone project.
Overall, phenomenal film, one of the Coens' best and certainly their most underrated, and don't me if you don't like it because I can't blame you.10/10
