The Shining
beautiful sound, costumes, set lighting. the maze chase....danny's tricycle.... shelley duvall is fabulous as always!!!
honestly so much better than the book. the whole time reading it, it felt as though king was saying that all of jack's abuse and misogyny was because of the alcohol, or the hotel, or his father, or some other evil thing outside of his control. but i think kubrick's movie really captures jack's asshole-ness not as a symptom of his life but as a feature of his personality. it's his ego that makes his status as "man of the house" so intoxicating.
as well as jack, i completely preferred how wendy was portrayed in the movie to the book. such a main point of her in the novel was her beautiful blond hair, legs, and just how conventionally attractive she was. her inner monologue was so often sexually motivated. shelley duvall played the character like a 3d person. her goal wasn't to be with her husband, it was to raise and protect her son from the man that had the potential to harm both her and danny.
truly i felt like the film captured so much more. the fear of when you're with a man you can't trust not to harm you was so palpable i felt it in my gut, like i was there. a true 5/5!
