Poor Things
2023 Ranked
Amazingly potent and equally funny story about maturing and leaving your bubble. Bella Baxter has one of the most largest character arc's I've seen done in such a short time, and not a moment of it feels rushed. The unique scenario this movie puts Bella into almost acts as a catalyst that reveals the true motives behind everyone surrounding her. From the moment she meets another man the loss of innocence rapidly begins and at a newborn age she's heavily taken advantage of. The following journey exposed the viewer and Bella to just about everything wrong with society through an extreme childlike lens and by the end Bella has fully matured, entertained all ideologies, and taken Godwin's place.
On the technical front I instantly found myself blown away by the bright and beautiful painted world of this movie, suicide has never been prettier. The costume design, production design, and cinematography is easily the grandest and most impressive from this year. I appreciate the dedication to not letting everything be CGI, so many real sets and matte painted backgrounds it was so surreal, every time they would do a wide shot my jaw dropped. The lenses used in the movie were very unusual but worked great for providing this literally fucked up perception of the world and a clever way of fitting more in the shot. Every cast member's performance was on point as well, Mark Ruffalo was hysterical and despicable and Emma Stone was amazing as to be expected. Emma Stone is definitely my favorite actress now as she's been in the two best pieces of media of 2023 and maybe some of all time (This and The Curse)
Movie of the year!!!
