***What you most want is what you most can’t have and that the most you can’t have is what you already had and lost*** After sweeping the Oscars we finally have an answer of what does the Chris Nolan blank check look like. Of course it’s *The Epic*. His previous works could be described as epics but this is like the swords and sandals of the 50s/60s. As the ringer would put it, we are currently at Nolan’s apex mountain of his career. Undeniably he is this generation’s filmmaker. It’s everything you’d expect at this point of Nolan’s career. Tight script, loud, good cast, practical filmmaking, but now at a bigger scale than ever before. Seeing hundreds of in costume extras running as fast as they can off a beach being chased by giants gave me that Dead Mans Chest itch I’ve been wanting for so long. There are surprises, such as some really disgusting American Werewolf in London type body horror. The standout for me is Jennifer Lane’s edit. My movie brain loves when we have an image but as the story progresses we go back to that same image and it now means something new. It happens like 50 times and it works. every. single. time. It hit me the most when we concluded the dog’s story. The best dog tale of all time. I do wonder what this movie looks like with Hardy or Bale in the main role tho. (No Damon shade) This is a blockbuster and not a historical retread of the original story. Damon still has the star power to root for this dude to get home. It’s his specialty at this point. What wraps this up is my fav third act of his entire filmography. I have a kick for an ending in either a duel or challenge of some sorts. Nolan has gotten better and better with his action scenes. Gone are the times of clunky quick cutting Batman fights and now weapons have weight and arrows wiz by at deadly speeds. This last fight man… worth the admission. Damon going crazy style while Ludwig’s drums keep rising and that weasel Robert Pattinson is screaming away at his goons and the fight gets more intense as it goes on with more and more weapons while upstairs Tom Holland is getting his ass beat ahhhhhhhhhh I love it. Overall a successful modern telling of a classic epic. Where does Nolan go from here? Dude idk bro. I would love for him to go crazy crazy puzzlebox mode like Tenet or back to basics 2000s thrillers type beat. Oh also what an awful credits song.
