I can appreciate the bluntness of this film but at the same time I’m so exhausted of these inner beauty movies where the main character only comes to appreciate themselves once the body horror starts happening. The unwillingness to commit to a more severe negative reaction happening to Joan made me wonder if the nasty stuff would be self-inflicted or wouldn’t happen at all, which to me would have even felt more transgressive in a post-substance world.
