The Nightingale
Oof that last shot on the beach was unbelievable. I enjoyed the Gaelic music incorporated into it. The music broke my heart every time I heard Aisling Franciosi sing. Having this be a revenge story for both a white woman and a native was actually quite clever and avoids many white savior type narratives. Using both characters as a way to look at healing is quite extraordinary. Franciosi's acting was probably the best I have seen ever. I am extremely hopeful for all her future endeavors. Baykali's acting, as a first timer, blew me completely out of the water. His character depth, mixing a little joyfulness with his desire to free his people, is a commendable and impressive. I have not been exposed to other Jennifer Kent's works, but I know automatically that she is a risk-taker, a trailblazer, and a true woman of film. She knows the stories she is telling and how to bring out uncomfortable. The Nightingale is definitely more disturbing and horrifying than anything else I have ever seen.
