Sentimental Value
I need to sit with this one for awhile because it’s been an hour and I’m still unsure of how I’m feeling. It was so special, I’m already wishing I could watch it for the first time again.
I think this film makes you realize that we ought to take time with ourselves in order to appreciate (or fully grasp, I suppose) the relationships that define us. The most confronting and uncomfortable aspect of the relationships we hold onto with other people (especially our families) is that, although they do hurt us at times, we also must dig into our own shortcomings in order to establish growth.
I appreciated how we as the audience never stayed with one character until we felt like we truly knew them. We got glimpses into everyones lives just enough to understand the subtle nuances and then we were moved on to the next. This was, I feel, intentional to establish a boundary between them and us. We are there to observe rather than to be let in completely.
Also (just me rambling now), I think something this film does so well is encapsulating the fleeting moments of life that we are so quick to either brush off or think nothing of. When truly I believe it is these that make life worthwhile. We grow to understand ourselves when we sit with the smaller aspects of life—when we allow in vulnerability rather than attempting to runaway from it. Not every moment must be some grandiose declaration of change for that change to occur.
