07/20 films watched from the list "Movies I want to watch by the end of 2023" I think Satoshi Kon was a time traveler. He read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, went back in time and decided to make his own version of it. Disorienting as ever, the film melts fiction into reality and viceversa. Try guiding yourself through color palettes, jumping from a movie to another, from decade to decade, and from staging to stage; no matter how much you try, you will fall into the illusion of never knowing what exactly you are watching. In Perfect Blue we had a similar case of constant perplexity, however, in that one it was for the sake of psychological horror. Meanwhile, here we are being played with by the director (just like our protagonist Chiyoko) to impose heartbreak to us, the audience (just like what happens to Genya, who is also just a spectator.) Genuinly beautiful, memorable and heartfelt. Don't miss it.
