Circumstance
my ultimate queer film watchlist #14
I honestly don't even know where to begin. Watching this was certainly an experience. Its the type of movie you cherish while watching but never watch again. This film dared to explore a touchy subject and managed to tell a story, which is probably a reality for so many women in the middle east, so beautifully. It definitely got me thinking about the women who actually have to go through this. "Have they seen this film? If so, what did they think about it? Did it make them realise that they are more than baby making machines and housewives?" That's basically what's been on my mind since I've seen this film. Not only did the film manage to shed light on how underdeveloped countries in the middle east are when it comes to gay rights, but it also shed even more light on how underdeveloped they are on women's rights as well. Shit, basic human rights. This film dared to tell a beautiful love story. But it also dared to tell a story at which challenges the government of that specific region on how they operate. It was a sexy, heartbreaking, and inspiring story all at once. I wonder how many Muslim/Arab women saw themselves in the two lead characters.
