“Everybody has to die but I will not be murdered” This is Akira Kurosawa at his rawest and most fearless, an extremely personal yet his most universally realistic movie. The narrative revolves around Toshiro Mifune(a 35 year old actor who plays a 65-70 year old man) who still can’t forget the horrors of the then post apocalyptic Japan, how his fear of something very palpable and very realistic is deemed as abnormal and insane. This is the most emotional Kurosawa film I’ve seen yet and certainly one of my favourites. As usual the blocking was just mind blowing , Takeshi Shimura showing his worth in every minute he was present and Toshiro Mifune proving why he is literally one of the greatest actors of all time, this being his absolute best performance(yes over Kikuchiyo) simply because of his physical acting, the slight bent spine , the typical old man walk and what not and it still had Mifune crashing out(😭) every moment as usual. On a serious note I too shall eternally live in fear for all that human nature could do and create. Coincidentally I am watching this film two days after an unforgettable revolutionary movement in India, and I will forever be scared how easily corruption can relapse and kill those who haven’t even got the chance to live yet:).
