Detachment
This film, to me, is like walking by a hospital garden filled with sick people and feeling that gut-wrenching pain in your chest, not because you’re scared but because you know it could have been you. You could have been one of them, and in some quiet, unexplainable way, you feel like you should have been. Maybe that’s how Henry feels with his students, carrying the weight of their brokenness as if it belongs to him, because perhaps he thinks he deserves it. Watching him, I felt that same impossible heaviness in my own chest, a sort of self-directed guilt, a quiet self-hatred that comes up whenever you are going home.
