Train Dreams
joel edgertons acting was powerful. while the rest of the cast was pretty much relegated to not even side character status, i think this is meant to show how disconnected from humanity robert became after his loss. to me this whole movie is about that pervasive sense of loss - not just his great personal tragedy, but also seeing his way of life and even the world pass him by.
while roberts life may have fallen into a standstill after losing his family, the movie did a great job contrasting that with the progress humanity made over those decades (axes to chainsaws, steam trains to cars, wood to concrete bridges). it was wild realizing that this guy who pretty much lived his whole life in one part of america, that never even saw an ocean in his lifetime, was also able to fly in a plane and even see man walk on the moon.
the entire movie was gorgeous but the scene where he's sitting in the water and everything is these different shades of blue was especially striking to me. i really enjoyed this movie.
