This movie is soul crushing. I genuinely don’t think I’ve seen a movie that has made me such a wreck like this in such a long time. The closest thing I could compare it to would be The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but this felt so much more heart breaking to me. I think it might’ve been the fact that we see exactly what happened to her and how the entire world treats her after, her parents included. I really enjoyed the plant (mostly tree) symbolism worked in throughout the movie. She is assigned a tree as her subject to study for the year in her art class, symbolizing her having to process her traumatic experience. At the end of the movie we see her dad chopping down a tree a days before they plant flowers, to me this felt like a new beginning for her, leaving the past behind and fully coming to terms with what happened to her. To top it all off Melinda is played by a 14 year old Kristin Stewart (what could’ve made it more heart breaking?). I simply cannot believe that a movie that felt so impactful is so severely underrated, it’s obviously not a perfect film but I think more people at least should know about it. It was EXTREMELY devastating to watch but I’m glad I did.
