Forever is and will be the greatest movie musical of all time (Though Les Misérables is so dang close). Every detail in every scene feels so meticulously crafted, and there are so many things that make this movie special. What really stands out is how this movie uses the medium of a musical to advance its storytelling. It never feels like the characters just randomly burst into song, but the movie uses the music to advance its narrative, and that's not something you see too often. Though I imagine it was a shock, this, without a doubt, deserved the best picture when, and I will be rewatching many, many times.
