The Master
"If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world."
PTA does not miss, and this is one of his best works. A story about a character just looking for a place, and a cult leader using him a pawn for his sophisticated scheme leads to very interesting dynamics.
By far, the most interesting thing about this movie is the deeply complex relationship between Lancaster and Freddie. We know that Freddie is being manipulated for part of a larger plan, and we can tell he’s spiraling worse, but for some reason, it works for both of them. The development between these two characters is top notch, largely due to great writing, and two incredible performances.
Joaquin Phoenix has always been one of my favorites, and this is his best performance. He knows how to play a psycho for sure. I can see why he was cast as the Joker years later.
PSH is considered one of the best to ever do it, and this performance is a big part as to why he’s held to that regard. The way he portrays complex emotions through face acting and restraint is some of the best I’ve seen. His character is also very interesting. We know he leads a cult, but we never actually see this side. The audience is influenced to believe he is a good person who serves his people, and takes them to better places. Yet, we know this is not the true intention, as is with every cult. But we don’t know the motivation, and we never do.
PTA is one of my favorites, especially after this banger.
Shoutout Amy Adams too, great supporting performance. Rami malek is still overrated af.
