The Matrix
I have not seen this film in years, and I’m very glad I came back to rewatch it. My wife had never seen it so we checked it out. We had the soundbar blasting and it was a great time.
This movie is phenomenal and deserves all the hype that it gets. It was such a new and original film and so influential. It may have taken inspiration from other material, but to me nothing of this degree had been done. It’s such a deep and complex film, yet it very fun at the same time. It takes its time to slowly give you the information that you need and it doesn’t overwhelm you. It’s one of those films where even if you’re confused on certain plot points, it does not take away from the rest of the film.
Like I said it’s such a rich story. It’s very engaging throughout the film. It’s also a film that makes you ponder, think about things, question things. It leaves you with something. On top of the story, the atmosphere around it is just so cool. This sci-fi punk like vibe is really cool and I dig it. The world of The Matrix itself is very fascinating.
One thing idk if it gets mentioned enough, but is how amazingly shit this film is. It looks SO good. The imagery is such a standout here. One thing that I love is the green tint this movie has in the color pallet. It makes it looks so unique. I think of shots like the car under the bridge while it’s raining, the bullet shells raining down from the helicopter, etc- this film is filled with amazing shots like those.
Now I gotta talk about the action. It is so cool. The last 45 minutes is just a ride filled with very well done action sequences. The hand to hand fight scenes are choreographed so good and they’re very entertaining to watch. The shootout that takes place in the bottom floor of the skyscraper is also one of my favorite shootouts of all time. The 90’s music playing while they’re flipping all over the place in slow mo is so dope.
The characters are all iconic and played well by their actors and actresses. Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne have such a fun screen presence, and I’m really glad they brought them back together for the John Wick franchise.
My only real flaw with the film is about an hour or so in the pacing slows down for a bit. It’s really not that long though. Other than that, the pacing is honestly amazing. It flies through besides that small patch.
This is a must watch for anyone who wants a list of films they need to see before they die.
