Titanic
Yeah so this might be a shock to some of you who know me well… but yeah I loved this film watching it this time. I remember watching part of this when I was a kid, then I don’t think I revisited it till high school in my film class. Even then I don’t think I really watched it all that thoroughly so this might be like my first ACTUAL watch where I was fully invested. There’s so much that has already been said about this film, and truthfully nothing I have to add will change what’s already been spoken, but I still want to express myself here. Some people love it, I’m sure some hate, some may say it’s the greatest film of all time, some may say it’s the most overrated film of all time! It’s one of those movies where I could see someone leaning towards any end of the spectrum but me myself, I can now say I love this movie and think it is fantastic.
There’s so much to appreciate here. Titanic has a lot to offer. It’s a love story, a period piece, and a disaster film. Yet I feel it’s all interwoven so well! It’s just a bit over 3 hours in its runtime, yet it all feels SO needed and if I’m being honest, I would NOT have been bothered if there was some directors cut with additional footage. I’d have eaten it up. The film absolutely drenches you in its story and in the characters. You feel so immersed in all of it. They’re able to introduce so many characters that are all so unique and different, and it makes you feel like you’re there. I love Jack and Rose honestly and there relationship. In my opinion one of the best romances put to film in my opinion.. I am so invested in what goes on between them.
From a technical aspect on its own, this film is a 5/5. What they were able to do with this movie is just mind blowing. Once again James Cameron pushes the limits of film and gives us something that is top notch quality. The sets, practical effects, costume design, etc- it all makes this film look and feel SO authentic and lived in. It really does take you back to 1912. The sets here are gorgeous and so nice to look at. You can tell so much hard work and care went into this. All of the effects with the water and the ship are so impressive it’s crazy they were able to make this all work! I think Cameron’s previous work on The Abyss probably paid off here..
The visuals are so good. The film has such great cinematography and I should add, if you’re a physical media collector, the 4K of this is a MUST have! The music in the film is also very beautiful. I know it’s been memed on so much (as this film has in general) but I think it really is such a good score. It adds to the emotion of the film, which I should add- there is a lot of it! So much emotion here. It’s a rollercoaster.
Not sure if I was expecting a 5/5 from me here, but I think it’s very deserving of it. It’s one of those films that gets so much attention, but I really do think it is deserving. If you were to tell me this is the greatest film of all time I would completely respect that. One issue I’d add is some of the line delivery and dialogue is a bit cheesy for sureeeeeee. I feel like the performances are great, but some of that line delivery is questionable. The way in which the story is told also is kind of tacked on at times as well. Those things aside, this film is a classic. It’s 3+ hours, yet moves so effortlessly. I did not get bored, and I was so engaged in the story.
