Monster
“Isn’t that what you wanted doctor? That’s what you said anyway”
Tenma calling Johan a bastard, and telling him he was better off being dead than alive while in a coma like state.*“I was supposed to die that night. You’re the one who resurrected me, doctor.”

I don’t watch anime’s anymore, but when I did, I stumble upon Monster. I read the manga and enjoyed the ambience of the mystery and the realization of how sacrifices can alter your life easily. Doctor Tenma and Johan relationship throughout the entirety of the series is complex and complicated.
Johan views Tenma as a parental figure, while Tenma believes he created and brought a monster back into the world after his fate was nearly sealed. The entire time you see Johan purposely putting Tenma in horrible situations to see how long he can sustain himself and the morality that Tenma has. In the manga, you’re immediately introduced to the idea that everyone is extremely selfish in Tenma life, his ex fiancée, his ex fiancée father who’s the director of the hospital selfishly telling Tenma to pick important figures over the poor, and lesser known folks in society.
Tenma picked an opera singer over a construction worker who arrived earlier and ended up dying due to Tenma forced decision by the director. Tenma is shown clear frustration and anger that he’s being taken advantage of his skills because the director decides for him. This I believe sets the mood so believable well because we see that Tenma can’t stand how the director tells him how he should decide things, but his decision to save the twins, leads to a horrible fate that he resurrected a man made monster into society.
This further puts Tenma on the pedestal and tests his morality even more. It’s what I admire about Tenma character because at a glance you see a broken, reserved man, but I think it’s a character that’s been pushed to the brink, but manages to keep a steady pace at his own views despite the relationship he has with Johan.
“When you’re in the darkness, you only sink deeper into it. Keep the light shining.”
“It’s never too late. You can always start over”
“A doctor’s priority is to save whoever he can! Everyone’s lives are equal!”
The entire time you see Johan purposely mindfucking Tenma, making him realize his choice of saving Johan ultimately meant that he brought society into a shithole because truthfully, Johan is a creation of pure intelligence, modeled looks. The definition of a monster who looks down on everyone no matter who they are.
This is one of my favorites, just because of the psychological aspect to it. I think everyone should give it a try, it’s truly amazing and unique. The storyline is amazing in this and I love all the characters, especially Tenma and Johan complexity.
